What is the function of a shock absorber?
A shock absorber has two functions. In addition to controlling the spring and suspension system, it also ensures that the tires maintain constant contact with the ground. Whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion, the bottom surface of the tires is the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road. If the contact between the tires and the ground is interrupted or reduced, it will severely affect the control of driving, steering, and braking.

The working principle of a shock absorber is to convert the kinetic energy (motion) of the suspension system into thermal energy (heat), which is then dissipated into the atmosphere through a heat exchange mechanism. However, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
As mentioned earlier, a shock absorber is essentially an oil pump. The piston is connected to the end of the piston rod and comes into contact with hydraulic fluid in the pressure tube. As the suspension moves up and down, hydraulic fluid is forced through tiny passages (orifices) inside the piston. Since the orifices only allow a small amount of fluid to pass through, the piston slows down, which in turn slows the movement of the spring and suspension.
Shock absorbers automatically adjust to road conditions, as the faster the suspension moves, the greater the resistance provided by the shock absorber.

Conventional Telescopic Shock Absorbers
This is the simplest type of shock absorber, and when it malfunctions, it is typically replaced rather than repaired.
This type of shock absorber can be found in both front and rear suspension systems and is relatively inexpensive.
Strut Shock Absorbers
Strut-type shock absorbers replace a part of the suspension system, making them more robust and durable to withstand greater loads and forces.
They are commonly found in the front and rear of small to mid-sized vehicles, though larger vehicles are also increasingly adopting strut suspension designs. Struts come in two types: sealed and repairable.
Spring Seat Shock Absorbers
Spring seat shock absorbers combine features of both telescopic and strut-type shock absorbers. Like struts, they are a combined suspension and shock absorber unit.
However, unlike struts, they are not designed to withstand significant lateral loads. Spring seat shock absorbers are made with components similar to conventional shock absorbers and are sealed, requiring full replacement when they fail.
